Siberian tigersThese tigers were once found throughout the Russian Far East, northern China and the Korean peninsula. Hunting brought the tigers to almost extinction. They were saved when Russia became the first country in the world to grant the tiger full protection.
Amur tigers have the largest home range of any tiger subspecies because they have to search over large areas to find food due to low prey densities. They represent the largest unfragmented tiger population in the world. In the early years of the Russian Civil War, the tigers were nearly wiped out. The few that remained ad survived in the were cut off from the main population by the building of railroads.
Slowly and steadily the the tigers populations is rising. Tigers are included in the banning of international trade.
In the past few years there have been efforts to conserve and help the tiger population grow by many people.

China has public awareness campaigns including celebration of the first Global Tiger Day in July 2010. Also many wildlife conservation societies have gotten together to help the Siberian tigers.
